NEW CONSTRUCTION

The homeowners sought to incorporate the natural features of the site when building their new residence, and create a structure harmonious with its environment. To that end, Fuse organized the building around a singular, mature, ponderosa pine tree. The great room’s butterfly roof expands outward to capture views of Central Oregon’s Cascades and Mt. Bachelor. To mitigate long-term environmental impacts, thoughtful design and construction decisions were made to achieve an Earth Advantage Platinum energy performance rating.

The home embraces the indoor–outdoor lifestyle of many Bend families, with spaces designed for entertaining groups both small and large, at any time of year. A butterfly roof creates a dynamic volume for the kitchen, dining, and living rooms while playing to their sense of intimacy and expanse. A private wing containing three bedrooms defines the central courtyard. Upstairs, an art studio, guest suite, and roof-top deck offer alternate perspectives of the landscape and mountains beyond.

The interiors blend a mix of modern sensibility, whimsy, and rustic materiality. Reclaimed wood, stone, concrete, and steel are used to create a durable, yet warming aesthetic. Custom casework and furniture pieces give refinement to specific functional needs.
