Glen Park
ADDITION
This 2 bedroom, single family home located in the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco was cramped for a growing family. A 2-story addition built in to the slope of the property added a main bedroom suite and family room. The addition floods the space with natural light and connects the newly terraced backyard to the house. The kitchen and spaces adjacent to the addition were reconfigured, opening the entire house visually and functionally. The new stepped concrete walls are finished in Venetian plaster with stained wood windows creating composed views to the garden.
The showpiece of this remodel is the elegant, sculptural stair. A collaboration with the client, the guardrails are fabricated out of single sheets of ½” plate steel and the 2” thick treads out of reclaimed walnut. The open risers allow light to permeate into the den while creating a soft divide for a desk and computer. The stairwell opens the space to landscaping and the sky above. Use of sliding glass panels, a serpentine curtain track and a 5’ pocketing panel door allow for various levels of privacy and space flexibility.
The exterior of the addition and the existing walls in the rear yard are clad with a custom shaped, redwood siding, a strong modern sensibility as counterpoint to the original painted stucco street façade. This home’s new sculptural cubic form animates both the interior and exterior experiences along the full steep lot.
